OmmWriter App Reviews

Perfect for zoning out into a writing dimension

Not much needs to be said. Plug in some headphones, fire-up OmmWriter, and focus all your energy on channeling your heart, soul, and mind, through your finger-typing. Thank you SO much for creating an app that cuts out all the noise. This is delight for anyone who needs to write.

Best for Creative Writing

Thanx a lot. i tried nearly all of minimal writing apps in app store. and OMM was - is - best of them. the only app when i open it, i certainly write. the only app! Scrivener in good for projects and big stories, but pom is best for creative writing. best for writers with writer’s block!

Helps me let the words flow.

Other writing apps let me do what seems like a million things. But then it takes me forever to write just a little. Ommwriter gets all that out of the way, and lets me just WRITE without overthinking it. I write more creatively and less self-consciously. I just get it on paper and move on to other things. Perfect, for me, for blogging.

Great, almost perfect app for me

I’m writing what might turn out to be something of a memoir eventually, and ommwriter is perfect for getting into an introspective mood at the end of a busy day. I would call the app perfect with addition of two features: 1. bold and italics. Not too much formatting baloney, just bold and italics. 2. More intuitive use of fullscreen. I think the app would benefit from conforming to the normal full-screen rules that most apps use, where a full screen app occupies a new desktop. I realize that this detracts slightly from the “concentration” thing, I just think it would be more intuitive if it obeyed the normal full screen rules. Other than these two minor gripes, this app has me doing my best writing, hands down.

I enjoy writing again!

I have been looking forward to trying this app for quite some time. It is everything that I hoped it would be. I can finally concentrate on my writing. I love the ambient music and the typewriter sounds that the app makes. I can also save my writing in pdf or rich text form, which I appreciate. Its a really nice app that does what it should; just like all things "mac". Im really content; the app sends me into a zen- like state which helps with writers block and procrastination.....I actually enjoy writing again! Thank you for creating this app; Im grateful.

Version 1 was way better

I loved the pre-upgraded versin of this app, but since the big update have barley used it. As others have said, the sounds are far less pleasing now and the music is far too distracting. Large swells in volume and intensity really take away from the meditative environment the dev created with the first version. A shame.

My favorite app on my MacBook

This app is my single faorite program on my Mac. I have been using it for over two years and it is still the only program I can/will write creatively in. Excellent vision and perfectly beautiful in all of the details. It would be nice to see a new update with some newer backgrounds & music tracks, but even as it is, OmmWriter is brilliant.

Fix this app! its almost good.

Do not buy this yet!!! This is really not finished and they are selling it, very slimy…. The writing part of ths application is nice, simple, minimal, but they have really been negligent in their programming. It is completely usless if you use multiple desktops, the white background will be on one desktop, the writing on another, etc.. usless. You guys should finish this app, it will be good if you do. It is not compatible with the operating systems they say it is. Beware.

New Update, Still The Most Productive For Me

I have been using OmniWriter for over a year, and while I enjoyed the past audio tracks, I understand legally why they had to change them. Honestly, some of them just seem too intrusive and hope they add more in the future that are unique to the app, but also are more ambient. That said, I love the new keyboard click/typing options and while this seems really gimmicky at first, I find this to be the single best app on my laptop for concentrating and writing. It’s immersive and that’s genius for my mind to freeflow thoughts. I use OmniWriter to get everything out, barely editing as I go and then I’ll export into something else for a more thorough examination. But there is something creative and artful about how this writing tool works that allows me to write and get blocked less. I value this app beyond belief and would recommend it highly to many creative writers. *UPDATE: Still using this app regularly. I do wish they’d update it with some slight tweaks: More ambient noise filtering. Maybe one or two better keyboard clicks? (Or make a way for users to add their own). I’d also like to be able to choose any font I want, instead of the choices they offer. (i.e. San Francisco would be a nice addition!)

Perfect for Perfectionists!

I am a perfectionist. When I am writing, it is common for me to get stuck editing a few sentences or a paragraph over and over again, not letting myself move on until I am satisfied, and then still going back to it later. I can spend hours on this time-wasting habit, and sometimes it makes for very unproductive sessions. Needless to say, I was intrigued by OmmWriter and it’s promise of distraction-free writing. I gave it a try. And I was WOWED. The OmmWriter app takes you to a space that is quiet, introspective, ambient, and 100% distraction-free. All of those hang-ups in a word processor—rich text, formatting, word count, toolbar after toolbar of colorful buttons to press—it’s not there. There is just an empty space, large and open, for you to write. There is gentle music, and an almost-hypnotic tapping sound with each keystroke. You can’t keep track of character numbers. There’s no bolding or italicizing anything. No formatting paragraphs or text. The only thing you can do is write—and so you WRITE. And you write. And you write. For years, my perfectionist hang-ups have set my writing pace. Now, I can leave those hang-ups outside this app and write faster and more efficiently, which only improves my work. Recommended 100%.

Doesn’t work with multiple screens

I’ve owned OmmWriter since like 2011, and I’ve gotten more than my money’s worth out of it, but it does NOT work with multiple screens, Ommwriter just disappears. Fix this and I’ll rerate it at 5 stars, because it’s perfect otherwise.

Productivity Restored

I was skeptical at first, believing the claims about music, backgrounds, and etc. to be gimmicks. But I decided to bite. I started up the app and suddenly, 2 hours later, I realized that I had almost two rough pages of a biological review article written (which is a lot for a formal review article). This app caused me to focus on my writing like I haven’t done in a very long time. I plan to use this app for all of my writing from now on and then copy-paste to a .docx when I am finished.

A safe, distraction-free place to write

The title says it all — it’s a safe, distraction-free place to write. I find myself hitting the keys more and fiddling around less because of the insanely minimalist design. When you want to get something from your brain onto the page, this is your tool. I didn’t think I’d use most of the features, but I find the audio tracks and page colors to be incredibly helpful. I can’t recommend this enough.

A Simple Review

OmmWriter is simply a wonderful unique littel bit of text editor simplicity.

No longer updated

The last update was back in 2012. The app does not support the new Mac OS X EI Capitan well. Please be aware!

Peaceful writing environment; not user friendly.

This is a brilliant idea for a writing app, as it gives you the feeling that you’re writing down your thoughts while residing in a peaceful and relaxing environment. However, there are some major short comings that you need to be aware of before buying: 1) Font face cannot be changed. 2) Font size cannot be enlarged. 3) Cannot pick your own background. This is a MAJOR FLAW of this program, as they give you options that range from super small text size to kind of normal at best. As someone who has done computer programming for years, this is kind of inexcusable, as most modern day operating systems already provide the ability for someone to at least pick a font that they like and a size that is comfortable to their eyes. Overall, it’s a neat idea, but flawed.
